Choi Han-ki's Theory of Moral Psychology

Kang, Bong-soo

This article explores Choi Han-ki(崔漢綺)'s theory of moral psychology. Choi Han-ki believes that humans are born with the mental abilities(guessing intelligence, wet-flame intelligence). However, these mental abilities are expressed and developed only when they experience an appropriate environment. Therefore, it can be seen that the acquisition of moral knowledge and the formation of personality are achieved through the interaction between the individual and the environment. But experience of the world is impossible without first borrowing the action of the body. The ‘body and mind’ connected by Ch'i(氣) is an important tool to communicate with the world. Thus, the body and mind work together to contribute to the discovery and learning of knowledge. According to the body-mind learning theory, moral personality develops into the stage of socialization of conventional morality, the stage of reflection on conventional morality and autonomous moral development, and the stage of intuition of universal morality beyond socialization and development. According to these stages of moral development, Choi Hanki designed a three-step curriculum: Insa-gyo(人事敎), Indo-gyo(人道敎), and Incheon-gyo(人天敎). In addition, he proposes moral education through a cross-curricular approach that encompasses the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences to achieve educational goals according to the step-by-step curriculum.
