인격통합성(integrity)에 대한 두 이론
공리주의에 대해 비판을 가하면서 윌리엄스(B. Williams)는 공리주의가 지구상에서 곧장 사라지게 될 것으로 단언한 바 있다. 윌리엄스의 예측은 전혀 들어맞지 않았지만, 윌리엄스가 비판의 근거로 제시한‘인격통합성’(integrity) 개념이 불러일으킨 반향은 그의 지적이 상당히일리가 있었음을 보여준다. 그러나 인격통합성 개념이 무엇인지에 대해 학자들 간에는 의견을 달리한다. 이 글은 인격통합성을 정의내리고있는 대표적 이론인 정체성 견해와 통합적 자아 견해의 유사점과 차이점을 검토한다. 이와 더불어 통합적 자아 견해에 대해 지적된 가벼움반론은 잘못된 이해임을 논증함으로써 통합적 자아 견해의 우월성을제안한다.
Two Theories on the Concept of Integrity
Attacking utilitarianism, Bernard Williams asserts that we will hear no more of it soon. Although he could not have been more wrong on the matter, scholars paid a great attention on the concept of ‘integrity’, on which he relied for his criticism of utilitarianism. It tells us that his criticism was not entirely misguided. There is, however, a significant amount of disagreement on how to understand the concept. This paper compares and contrasts two dominant views on integrity. Whilst I deal with each argument against the views, I argue that at least one argument against the integrated-self view does not work and suggest that it is a better view than the identity view of integrity.
